Guide

Best seeds for beginners

How to read stored spacing and day counts, and why the germination percent is a number you type rather than a crop fact.

Stored figures stay next to their citation. Wholesale and retail vegetable prices fluctuate with weather and supply. A high or low month is harvest-timing guidance, not financial advice, and this page does not quote a price.

A beginner crop on this site is one with a stored spacing, so the seed calculator can count plants. The germination percent in that calculator is the number you type. It is not stored on the crop, and this guide does not invent one.

Open the seed calculator, choose one of those crops, and enter the bed size. Seeds to buy use your germination percent. If a crop's spacing says "not stored", the calculator leaves the plant count blank.

Day counts are separate from spacing

A day count can be official or a farmer field note. The crop card above says which. Carrot's calendar day count is a field note, so it is repeated here with that label.
