Guide

Grow tomatoes in containers

Tomato nursery months, the stored pot size, and the marigold companion note from farmer field experience.

Stored figures stay next to their citation. Wholesale and retail vegetable prices fluctuate with weather and supply. A high or low month is harvest-timing guidance, not financial advice, and this page does not quote a price.

The official tomato record does not store a day count or a spacing. The pot size and the calendar day count are farmer field notes. Check both before you treat a number as a department figure.

Tomato

  • Days on the crop record: not stored.
  • In-row spacing: not stored.
  • Between-row spacing: not stored.

The calendar day count for this crop is a farmer field note, listed below when this guide includes field figures.

Nursery months and rain-shelter wording

Tomato's stored wet-zone windows are nursery periods. Capsicum, on the same wet-zone list, has a year-round window whose note mentions irrigation or rain shelters. That sentence is shown only because it is stored on the capsicum window. It is not copied onto tomato.

Official planting windows

  • Tomato · Low Country Wet Zone

    March · nursery_mid_march · transplant

HORDI says the suitable nursery period is the middle of March. The grid marks all of March because a month is the finest step. The same page gives an optimum elevation of 1000-2000 m and also says the crop can be grown in almost all agroclimatic zones except the up-country wet zone. Colombo is not named.

  • Sweet pepper · Low Country Wet Zone

No month pair is stored. · year_round · transplant

HORDI says capsicum can be cultivated in most agro-ecological zones throughout the year, with supplementary irrigation in dry periods. The same Planting section also lists Yala as April and May and Maha as November and December, and says it can be cultivated throughout the year under irrigation or rain shelters. Those two pairs are not stored as extra windows because the year-round statement already fills every month.
